The Art & Science of Teaching and Training People

The Top Five Reasons Why You Need The ClientNostics Certification

It’s Important You Can Move Clients from “Knowing” to “Doing”: Systems Matter!

As a pet professional, your success doesn’t just depend on your ability to train an animal—it depends on your ability to teach a human. Having a structured instructional system is the only way to effectively guide a pet owner from understanding a concept to flawlessly executing a physical skill.

Here are the top five reasons why investing in instructional systems is a game-changer for your business and your clients:

1. Bridges the Gap Between Theory and Execution

There is a massive cognitive leap between a client understanding why a behavior matters (declarative knowledge) and having the muscle memory and mechanics to split-second-time a click or capture a behavior (procedural knowledge). A structured instructional system breaks complex mechanical skills into micro-steps, allowing clients to build physical fluency safely and effectively.

2. Operationalizes Consistency Across Environments

When pet owners rely on raw memory rather than a systematic process, their training mechanics fall apart the moment they leave your training facility or living room. Systems provide clients with a predictable framework. This structure gives them a “road map” to follow when handling distractions in the real world, ensuring the dog receives clear, consistent cues every single time.

3. Reduces Client Frustration and Cognitive Overload

Learning a new physical skill while trying to manage a live, energetic animal is incredibly overwhelming. If you teach on the fly, clients suffer from cognitive overload and shut down. An instructional system sequences the learning—often using split-human/split-dog mechanics or dry runs—so the human can master the physical mechanics before you ever hand them the leash.

4. Empowers Clients to Become Independent Problem Solvers

When you teach a system rather than just a standalone trick, you are giving the pet owner a repeatable framework. Once they understand the systematic process of fading a lure, changing criteria, or managing a threshold, they can apply that exact same procedural loop to new behaviors and challenges long after their sessions with you are over.

5. Standardizes and Scales Your Business Value

From a business operations perspective, teaching via a proprietary or structured system elevates you from a “gig worker” to an expert consultant. Systems make your client homework sheets, video reviews, and progress tracking uniform. This predictability leads to faster, more reliable client compliance, glowing testimonials, and a scalable framework if you ever choose to bring on subcontracting trainers.

The Takeaway: True force-free, science-based training relies entirely on human compliance. If we don’t provide pet parents with a clear, systematic process to turn head-knowledge into muscle memory, we leave the animal’s welfare to chance. Systems don’t restrict your teaching—they liberate your clients to succeed.

  1. A training program that only focuses on the “What” is a lecture.
  2. One that focuses only on the “How” is often a confusing set of instructions.
  3. But a training that effectively integrates all three components is one that truly empowers learners and delivers tangible results.

💡 Why This Program Was Developed

The program was created to address the significant challenge of transferring knowledge from theory (declarative knowledge) to practice (procedural skills), especially in a professional setting where competence is paramount.

1. The Core Problem: The Gap Between “What” and “How”

Professionals often possess the “what” and “why” (the foundational facts and theory) but lack the “how” (the applied skills and competency) required for effective training and behavior procedures.

  • Analogy: Reading a car owner’s manual (declarative knowledge) does not make you a NASCAR driver (procedural skills). Similarly, knowing the ingredients for a cake doesn’t guarantee you can bake it perfectly.
  • The Difficulty: Declarative knowledge (like definitions and theory) is fundamentally different from procedural skills (like hands-on execution and muscle memory).

2. The Program’s Goal: Achieving Full Competency

The program’s entire design is built around the need for a comprehensive teaching and training system specifically engineered to facilitate this transition.

  • Focus: To ensure professionals are not only knowledgeable but are also fully competent at executing procedures and teaching and training others to complete the tasks effectively.
  • Solution: Providing the system necessary for transferring declarative knowledge into procedural skills.

3. Mastering People Skills & Consulting Skills:

  • Learn skills to train, teach, & coach students and clients effectively across all your business and teaching roles.
  • Master: Consulting skills, change management processes, and how to build powerful collaborations
  • Management: Learn systems for managing your training project, the change process, interviewing, and expectations.

📜 Requirements for Successful Graduation

To successfully graduate and earn certification from the program, attendees must complete a rigorous set of academic, practical, and reflective tasks:

1. Core Course Completion

  • Module and Homework Completion: Attendees must successfully complete each module and its corresponding homework assignments.

2. Active Participation & Reflection

  • Engagement: Must actively participate in message boards.

  • Feedback & Reflection: Required to provide feedback on assignments (to peers) and complete all reflection exercises (self-assessment).

3. Practical Skill Demonstration

  • Train The Trainer Assignment: Must complete a practical assignment demonstrating the use of the On Task Skill Coaching Method (this confirms mastery of the program’s core teaching system).

Several years ago, when I studied the Dog Behavior Diploma Program, I was delighted by the On Task Skill Coaching component. That was the only program I have attended that focused on people teaching skills and not just pet training skills. The hands on exercises were invaluable!!
